There is nothing quite like hitting the open road, finding the perfect spot and setting up camp. But an open awning leaves you exposed: to the sun, to the wind, and to whoever happens to be parked three metres away.
Awning walls are the cheapest way to fix all three at once. For a fraction of the cost of a full annexe, they turn the space under your awning into something closer to an extra room. Here is what they actually do, and how to work out which type suits your setup.
Privacy where you didn't have any. End walls and side panels turn an exposed site into a private one. In a busy holiday park over Christmas, that alone justifies the spend.
Protection from the weather. A sudden downpour or a stiff afternoon breeze stops being a reason to pack up and sit inside. Walls create a barrier that lets you keep using the outdoor space.
A cooler van. This one is consistently underrated. Shading the wall of the caravan directly, not just the ground in front of it, measurably reduces heat build-up inside. On a hot night, it makes a real difference to how hard your air conditioner has to work.
Somewhere to put things. Gear, bikes, wet boots. An enclosed awning area keeps them out of the van and out of the weather.
Most travellers end up carrying separate sun and rain walls, then swapping them over when the weather turns. The Campsmart XD Dual Layer privacy screens were designed to solve that specific annoyance by combining both layers in a single carry bag:
Run the mesh on hot days, drop the waterproof layer when a storm rolls through, or zip both together for maximum privacy and weather sealing overnight. You get most of the practical benefits of a full annexe without the weight, setup time, or price.
If you only need waterproofing, our waterproof privacy screens cover that on their own.
We select our end and side awning walls to survive the climate they will actually be used in:
We stock Camec, Coast, TRA and Supex alongside our own Campsmart label, which offers the same build quality at a sharper price.
Awning walls or a full annexe?
Walls are lighter, faster to set up and cheaper. A caravan annexe gives you a fully enclosed room with a floor, which is the best option for long stays in one spot. Most people start with walls.
How do I know what size to order?
Measure the awning, not the van. Our privacy screen size guide walks through it, and there is a step-by-step on how to attach a privacy screen to a caravan awning once yours arrives.
What does the shade rating actually mean?
It is the percentage of UV the fabric blocks. We have broken down what the shade ratings mean in practice if you want more details.
