Market Direct Campers (MDC) are built tough for the harsh Australian outback. MDC caravans are designed to take you off the grid in comfort. But no matter how rugged your van is, Australian winds can quickly turn a peaceful afternoon under the awning into a noisy, flapping nightmare. Awning damage is one of the most common RV insurance claims, but there’s a simple solution: the Campsmart Anti-Flap Kit (AFK).
Before fitting an AFK, it’s crucial to know what kind of awning your MDC caravan has. Older models and specific pop-tops often feature traditional roll-out awnings, while many of the newer hybrids (from 2022 onwards) come standard with 12V electric cassette awnings.
Campsmart caters to both styles. For standard roll-out awnings, the Campsmart Premium AFK comes in short, medium, and long sizes depending on your awning projection. For box or cassette-style awnings, Campsmart provides specialised adapter packs—such as the Fiamma F45S adapter or the universal Aussie Traveller PRO+—allowing their top-tier anti-flap kits to lock perfectly into your modern MDC electric awning canister.
The brilliance of a Campsmart Anti-Flap Kit lies in its straightforward, durable design. The kit essentially consists of a two-piece aluminium telescopic bar that spans the length of your awning projection. Here is how it connects to your setup:
Caravan Side Attachment: To fit the kit to your MDC camper, small stainless-steel brackets are permanently mounted to the caravan’s exterior wall, just below the awning fabric line. The Campsmart bar features a clip end that locks securely into this wall bracket.
Awning Roller Attachment: On the other end, the AFK features a metal pin (or a specialised spigot for cassette awnings). For traditional awnings, you simply drill a small hole (typically 20mm in and 20mm down) into the outer roller tube. For electric cassette awnings, the specific adapter slides or clips into the awning’s lead bar.
Clamping the Canvas: Once the telescopic bar is extended between the van wall and the roller, you lock it in place and tighten the built-in clamps over the awning fabric. The integrated rubber grips hold the canvas securely without causing any abrasion damage.
Beyond stopping the deafening wind flap, fitting a Campsmart AFK transforms your MDC setup. The rigid structure instantly improves rain run-off, preventing heavy water from pooling and stretching the canvas.
