How to choose the right caravan privacy screen

Three quick checks and you'll know exactly what to order.

1. Check your awning type

Privacy screens slide into a track on your awning using a spline, the rope sewn along the top edge. Roll-out and box awnings use different spline sizes, so the two types of screen aren't interchangeable.

  • Roll-out awnings (Carefree, Dometic, A&E, Sunburst) have a rounded roller bar and take a 6mm spline. Most of our screens are made for these.
  • Box or cassette awnings (Fiamma F45, Thule Omnistor and some Dometic models) wind back into a hard case and need a 4mm spline. Shop box and Fiamma awning screens.

Not sure which you have? Your caravan manufacturer can tell you, or give us a call.

2. Measure your awning

Screens are made to suit your awning's length, and roll-out and box awnings are sized differently. Check your awning length, then use our privacy screen size guide to find the screen that matches.

Buying for a new van you haven't picked up yet? Confirm the awning size with your dealer first. It's the most common sizing mix-up we see.

3. Choose your drop and fabric

The drop is how far the screen hangs from the awning.

  • Standard drop (1.8m): suits most on-road caravans and leaves a small gap at the bottom for guy ropes. Shop standard drop screens.
  • XD extra drop (1.95m): our own Campsmart range, long enough to peg straight to the ground. Handy for off-road, hybrid and touring vans where the awning sits higher. Shop XD extra drop screens.

Then pick the fabric that suits how you travel:

  • Mesh: blocks sun and prying eyes while letting the breeze through. Our Campsmart mesh screens have a 95% shade rating. Here's how shade ratings work.
  • Waterproof: Oxford-weave polyester with a PU coating keeps the rain out and packs down small. Shop waterproof privacy screens.
  • Dual layer: a mesh layer and a waterproof layer in one screen, so you slide it in once and switch as the weather changes. Shop dual layer screens.

Which screens go where

Long walls

The main screen, hanging from the roller bar along the length of your awning. Most setups start here. Shop long wall screens.

End walls

End walls close off one or both ends of your awning to block low morning and afternoon sun. They attach to the awning arm with Velcro straps, and many include a rope spline for use with an anti-flap kit.

  • Pop tops take a square-cut end wall. Shop pop top end walls.
  • Full-height caravans take an angled-cut end wall.

See all caravan end wall privacy screens, including our wider, longer XD end walls. Buying side and end screens together? Stick to the same range so the colours match.

Kitchen and fridge screens

These slide into the sail track on the off-side of your van to shade the kitchen window and fridge vents. Shop kitchen privacy screens or caravan fridge shades.

Black screens

Same job, darker look, in long wall, end wall and Fiamma sizes. Shop black privacy screens. We also stock Coast to Coast privacy screens alongside our own range.

Setting up your screen

  1. Slide the spline into your awning track, working from one end to the other.
  2. Peg the bottom edge with guy ropes and pegs (included with our Campsmart screens). The D-rings and eyelets sit on reinforced tabs.
  3. Want more shade? Use the eyelets with tent poles to angle the screen out as an awning extension.
  4. Wind picking up? Drop the screen straight down or take it off, and always pack it away dry.

Privacy screen FAQs

Will a privacy screen fit my awning?

It will if you match two things: your awning type (roll-out or box) and your awning size. Roll-out screens use a 6mm spline and box awning screens use a 4mm spline, so check the type first, then the length.

What size privacy screen do I need?

Check your awning length and type, then match it using our size guide, which lists every screen and the awning it suits.

What's the difference between standard and XD screens?

Standard screens have a 1.8m drop. XD screens have a 1.95m drop, so they can be pegged at ground level, which suits vans with a higher awning.

Are caravan privacy screens waterproof?

Mesh screens aren't waterproof, although they'll shed light rain when set at a steep angle. If you want to stay dry, choose a waterproof or dual layer screen.

Do I need end walls as well?

Not always. A long wall gives you privacy and shade on the open side. End walls help when the sun is low or neighbours are close on either side. Pop tops need square-cut end walls and full-height vans need angled-cut.

Can I leave my screen up when it's windy?

Keep it well pegged in a breeze, but in strong wind it's safest to take the screen down along with your awning. A screen catches wind and adds load to your awning.

Will a roll-out awning screen fit a Fiamma?

No. Fiamma and other box awnings have a smaller track that needs a 4mm spline, so choose a screen from our box and Fiamma range.

How do I clean my privacy screen?

Rinse off dirt with fresh water, let it dry fully before packing away, and check the stitching and tabs now and then. There are more tips in our cleaning and care guide.
