The best option will depend on where you camp, how much space you want to cover and how much room you have for storage. Compare the main types below, or browse the caravan mats.

Types of caravan mats

Foam PVC annexe matting: cushioning underfoot

Often sold as rubber annexe matting, these Campsmart and Supex mats are made from foamed PVC. The 600 g/m² material has a soft feel underfoot, with openings that allow air and water to pass through.

They offer a more cushioned surface than some other matting options, although the weight varies with size. The 3 m Campsmart mat weighs 4.5 kg, while the 7 m version weighs 10.5 kg. Both come with a zippered carry bag, making them easier to pack away and carry between trips.

Camec synthetic mesh: a lighter option for touring

Camec’s annexe floor matting has a close, two-tone weave, hemmed edges and eyelets for securing it in place. The breathable material is UV stabilised, can be hosed clean and comes with a reusable carry bag.

It’s a lighter option than comparable foam mats, which can be useful if you move between campsites regularly. Foam mats offer more cushioning, so it comes down to the balance of comfort and portability that suits you. It’s also worth comparing the specifications and dimensions of the sizes you’re considering.

Cgear MultiMat: for sandy and dusty campsites

Cgear MultiMat has a dual-layer knitted construction that allows sand and dirt to filter through to the ground, helping keep loose grit under control around your campsite. It’s a mesh-style mat, though, so it won’t provide the same cushioned feel as a padded surface.

There are square, rectangular and L-shaped designs to choose from. L-shaped mats can extend beside and behind your vehicle, so it’s worth comparing the full dimensions with your setup to find the right fit for your awning.

Muk Mat: for caravan steps and doorways

A large mat can cover the main living area, while a Muk Mat can help keep dirt and grit at the door. Its 40 mm synthetic grass blades help brush sand and grit from shoes before you step inside.

Ground mats sit outside the entrance, while rounded and pull-out mats are designed for different caravan steps. Check the dimensions of your step and the available door clearance when choosing a mat. Pull-out mats have fastening straps, while rounded step mats don’t.

For longer-lasting use, follow the care instructions and keep mats securely positioned. It’s also worth avoiding concentrated reflected heat from nearby glass or metal.

What size caravan mat do I need?

  • Measure the floor area, not the van: Set up your awning or annexe, then measure the usable ground length and width. Allow for walls, poles, step access and fixing points.
  • Use awning measurements as a reference: Our awning measuring guide explains the centre-to-centre arm measurement used for fitting roll-out awning screens and walls. That helps identify your awning’s size, but your mat needs to fit the ground area you want covered.
  • Compare both dimensions: Many foam and Camec annexe mats are 2.5 m wide, while several long Cgear mats are 2.4 m wide. For an L-shaped mat, check the space beside and behind the vehicle, including the cut-out.
  • Check the packed size: Before choosing a larger mat, compare its weight and packed dimensions with the space you have in your boot or storage compartment. If a carry bag is included, check its dimensions rather than relying on the shipping dimensions, which may describe the packaged product rather than the packed mat.

Caravan mats FAQ

What size mat do I need for my annexe or awning?

Measure the usable floor length and width with your setup in place, then compare both dimensions with the mat. It can help to allow some extra room for wall fittings, poles and access. The awning measuring guide can help with your awning dimensions, while the available floor area will determine which mat size fits your setup.

What’s the difference between mesh and rubber annexe matting?

The foam “rubber” mats in this range are made from foamed PVC and provide a cushioned feel underfoot. Camec and Cgear use synthetic mesh constructions, which have a more open structure. When comparing options, consider the weight, packed size and where you’ll be camping. Breathable, open matting allows air and water to pass through, but isn’t designed to act as a waterproof groundsheet.

Is Cgear MultiMat reversible?

Yes. Cgear confirms that the green-and-grey MultiMat can be used with either side facing up.

Can I use caravan matting on grass at a caravan park?

It’s a good idea to check the caravan park’s matting rules before setting up. Breathable foam PVC and mesh allow airflow, but that doesn’t necessarily mean grass will be unaffected during a longer stay. Checking the ground from time to time and following the park’s guidance can help you look after the site.
